FROM THE COAST TO THE MOUNTAINS

12 days, 11 nights.

Accommodation in country ranches. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

This route takes in three of Uruguay's most characteristic environments: the Atlantic coast, the wetlands and palm groves of the east, and the coastal mountain ranges interspersed with areas of natural uplands.

During the first two days we will be enjoying the undulating landscapes of the Sierra de los Caracoles. This is an area of low uplands (up to 400m) comprising gentle valleys watered by crystal-clear springs and streams, and surrounded by dispersed yet thick banks of trees and shrubs, all set in an environment of grazing land. The area in general forms the characteristic "monte serrano" uplands.

On day three we move over to the Atlantic coast, where we will be staying until day six, travelling around areas of lagoons and marshlands inside the 200,000-hectare area forming the Los Bañados del Este Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest wetlands in the Southern Cone.

The route also follows the coastline, we being accompanied by a large colony of seals.

On day sixth we will turn inland again to the natural protected area called La Quebrada de los Cuervos. In a jungle-like setting thriving in the shelter of a gorge carved out by a stream.

Lastly, on day eight, we will be returning to the marshlands area Los Bañados del Este. We will spend the last days at Laguna Negra enjoying the aquatic setting, with its landscapes of "Monte serrano" ravine uplands and pastureland.

On the twelfth day we return to Montevideo.
