Day 1-4. We will depart from Montevideo towards the Atlantic Coast to visit one of the largest wetlands in the Southern Cone, which is also one of the areas with the greatest bird diversity in the whole of Uruguay: the 200,000 hectares of the Bañados Del Este Biosphere Reserve. Milieu of palm groves, lagoons and marshlands.
Day 4-5. We will travel to the undulating landscapes of the Sierra de Minas. This is an area of low uplands (up to 400m) comprising gentle valleys watered by crystal-clear streams, and surrounded by dispersed yet thick banks of trees and shrubs, all set in an environment of grazing land. The area in general forms the characteristic monte serrano uplands.
Day 6-8. We will travel to the banks of the Uruguay River in order to visit the region of Esteros de Farrapos: 17,000 hectares lying along the river in an area subjected to the ups and downs of seasonal flooding and sediments brought by the floods. Aquatic, grassland and wooded environments, such as the Algarrobal (Carob grove, a savannah-like formation that is characteristic of the southern edge of Chaco).
Day 9-10. Resting on the banks of the Arapey River, in an area with thermal springs, we will take the opportunity to walk around the surrounding thick riverside woodland and to hear and spot resident species.
Day 11. We will travel up to the border between Uruguay and Argentina in order to enter the province of Corrientes.
From day 11 to day 16 we will visit several areas of Wet Chaco and Hawthorn forests. Bush-like forests, savannahs, palm groves and marshlands are predominant in this vast geographic region covering a large area of the north of Argentina.
Day 11-12. We will visit the National Parks of Esteros de Iberá and Mburucuyá. This area is a patchwork of woods, Palm groves, floodable grassland and reed beds around marshlands and lagoons.
Day 13 we will set off for Guaycolec State Park. On our way there, we will visit several Chaco environments. Guaycolec covers 25.000 hectares where palm groves alternate with isles of Chaco woodlands and riverside woodlands, all of which have been very well preserved.
Day 14. Our route will take us to Laguna Blanca and Rio Pilcomayo National Park, at the border with Paraguay. The whole of this area is constituted by the so-called Pantanal Argentino. It is a vast floodable plain featuring a great density of bird population.
Day 15-16. We will move towards the Parana jungle. We will travel along areas of Chaco and marshlands to reach Aristóbulo del Valle. This Southern region of the province of Misiones is made up by a landscape of hilly meadows with scattered midget palm trees. The landscape changes as we approach the once larger Parana jungle.
Day 17-18. We will go deep into the heart of the Parana Jungle. We will visit the Salto Encantado Provincial Park, and we will walk along the bank of the Parana River as far as the surroundings of El Dorado. In some regions of the Misiones highlands we can still find beautiful Parana Pine forests (Araucaria angustifolia), which are now strongly protected.
Day 19-20. We will walk along Iguaçu National Park. The park covers 492 square kilometres of subtropical forests, as well as one of the most magnificent natural beauties in the whole world: The Iguaçu Falls.
Day 21. We leave for the airport in order to return to our starting point: Montevideo.
